Hello,

i've bought myself a laser diode:
Details about 808nm 300mW High Power Burning IR Laser Diode DIY Lab-in Laser Equipment Parts from Industry & Business on Aliexpress.com

I will use it to make a mini laser engraver, for wood and stuff. I don't have problems making the mechanics (x-axis, y-axis), but the only problem is that i'm new into lasers :p
I also ordered a laser housing and driver:

But since i got some feedback, i was thinking the case won't be good enough for the laser, that the point of my laser won't be small enough. So i was wondering if there is any good solution, or what i have to aware of when i order a case?
Also, do you think a heatsink is necessary?

Im a noob within lasers but i would suggest that you build youtube own driver.
I have a small CNC with a 1+ watt laser, i am using a 4x4x4(cm) aluminium cube for heatsink.

That driver looks like shite, also a ripoff.

You can easily build yourself your own fixed current driver, because if you ask me, screw that potentiometer nonsense, too many diodes lost because of that.

It's as easy as this:


Anyway, the dot of the laser is not a problem, the power is. For any engraving work, go with 1W blue. You can always tone down the power if needed (or speed up the plotter - save time).

300mW IR won't do good on wood. In fact you can't even burn your skin with it unless you sharpie it black first. The only thing it'll reliably burn out are retinas.

Better to IR, as opposed to what?

If you mean, as opposed to rest of the spectrum, then no. Blue still wins for any given power level.

Besides, OP specified wood as one of the materials he wishes to engrave. Blue and violets will do the job perfectly, with blue being the better candidate because of easier diode availability, sturdiness - blue diodes can take much more abuse than violets, and higher powers being available if needed.
 
Heh, both, I wanna see how did you assemble it all.

Its ugly. My dad would sponsor me with NEMA 23 steppers + drivers to build a proper CNC if i got this one working. It was very cheap to build (exept for the laser) :)

The build was improvised, didnt follow any blueprint.

5x5cm Print area, not completly finished, the rubber bands are slipping sometimes, gotta replace them.

Looks pretty good, man, I was wondering what you're controlling it with, so it's an Arduino board?

So how do finally get what you want to engrave, on to the controller electronics? Do you first upload it to Arduino and just let it run, or is it connected to PC all the time somehow?

I have to upload it to the arduino, im going to use an old pc for the
Next build. Right now i have to type in the steps into a .ini file for it to work, so its kind of difficult to make complex things atm.

You could have the computer send simple commands to the Arduino over the serial port.

OP: 300mW will burn some types of wood, but not others, and even then only very slowly.
You need at least 1W to burn reliably, and don't forget safety glasses for viewing.
