20w handheld laser

Hey... I recently got a 1w IR diode module which I've been having fun with, driving with a LM388 and 1ohm 10w resistor. I have an aixis glass lens... but It focuses it into a line, not much good for burning after a couple of feet. Any sources where I can get a lens that will focus it to a point? Is this a fast axis lens?

I'm planning on getting a 20w DPSS bar next, to make a handheld cutter.

Is there anything in particular I should be aware of, how easy are they to kill with static electricity? I see a lot of warnings...

Any good sources for lenses for 20w bars?

Has anyone built a 20w bar laser on these forums? I did a search and could not find anything...

Also, where can I buy cheap eye protection goggles for IR 808nm range?
I've been using a BW security camera plugged into my plasma screen to look at the laser beam for now...

Thanks for any help!!

lithium polymer for RC. I have built a quadrocopter that carries a camera, draws 1,000 watts off of a couple of pounds of lipos... 70A of current in a hover at 14.4volts.

A small 2200mah lipo supports 20C-25C draw rate, or 44amps....

Im not sure how these bars are connected, series or parallel?

20W handheld? I want to know what the hell you would use to power it!
Lithium polymer 25C battery pack.

As a matter of fact, Bill is currently developing a driver for his own 25W handheld laser. Short range burner, 'cutter' as OP stated.
Custom machined host, 2 x 12 inches IIRC he said,
Exceptionally short duty cycles and very short battery life,

but for 25W laser, screw it all :D
@Hairrylamma, contact billg519, he will get you started.

BTW, lens you are looking for are called FAC lens (fast axis collimation), and unless they are already fabricated above the diode facet, it will be very difficult to find one and use it. Well, Bill did it :D

EDIT: Ah you beat me to it :D

Thanks, i'll shoot him a message.
I've got a 100w LED which is quite easy to power, 34v at 3A.... so I can't imagine it can be that hard to make a 20w laser diode run....

That would not happen to be an 100W emitter from sparkfun, would it?

Anyhow, Bill is the man, he will know everything.
I will use my own 25W diode bar in a TEC cooled long duty cycle build, computer PSU as a power supply ,further regulated by linear driver constructed for this purpose alone.
Also, I will run my diode bar at about 20A, not full power of 30 or so.

My LED array is from somewhere over in china, heh. Its pretty friggen bright, but gets hot as hell so you gotta use water cooling or a huge heatsink + fan. I was powering it with an LM338 as well with 0.3ohm resistor, but that setup was also getting hot, I needed an additional heatsink for my lm338, it would cut out after several minutes, do to overheat protection.

I could be wrong but isn't LM338 a higher voltage comparator circuit?
Or was that LM388... I used one of those in my DIY soldering iron regulator, compares desired vs. current power...

Don't you mean LM350 or something?
That has 3A max output IIRC.

I will try to improvise a TEC + enormus active cooling on the other side for my 20W labby. I just need some schematics from Bill (as soon as he will have time to finish it) and the fun will begin.
I am kind of afraid to power that thing even, I do have EP5 goggles but still 20W is 20W!

have you thought about a small CPU water cooling system?
lm338 is a variable voltage(or current) regulator, up to 5 amps! I use my lm338 to power everything :)

Holy crap, pics please.

You mean like this?

CPU water coolers are insanely expensive here, but since I already have some bigass TECs, I'll use those.

Then what the hell did I use in my temp regulator, hold on...
EDIT: Oh , LM339 is my IC... I switched the two.

Heh, you are in croatia! water cooler here is about $50-100 bucks depending on where you get it and what brand...

What is the current and voltage spec on your bar?

I can't find much about that... and the ebay bars have no specs!

Wow nice diode bar and not nearly as expensive as I would have thought
