17 watt 9xx nm diode from ebay

I have a 17 watt diode I got on ebay, and havent come up with a way to power it yet, I was wondering if anyone has played with these kind of diodes? I hooked it up with 3 amps input to test it, and it appears to work ok. It was prety bright in the camera. I wasnt able to colimate the fiber output very well but havnt played with it much yet eather seeing as I dont have a power supply that can run it. (yet, needs 27 amps!!) I also have another 3 watt one thats got a fiber in it, but I dont wanna ruin it to remove the fiber without talking to someone with experiance first! I noticed that Senkat had said he has played with these but this one has a connector and no fiber to remove from it. Does anyone know what these are capable of? Can it be colimated without any modification for a decent beam? :D

There is no such thing as a 17W diode. What you have is a diode array - a bunch of diodes side-by-side. These are then fed into a bundle of fiber cables so you end up with a bunch of diverging beams. You can focus this or try to collimate it, but it'll never be what you could get from a single beam.

Anyway, its going to be difficult since 900+ means its invisible. 808nm is workable because you can still see it lightly. For powering it, you really want to get a spec sheet. Otherwise you can guess at it based on other diodes, but a spec sheet is the way to go.

When you're actually ready to run it, you need very good heatsinking, and a lot of amps (as you figured out), so some nice thick wires (none of this 22 gauge crap - you'll melt the insulation right off). For that, you will need a decent PSU. If you're on a tight budget, I'd check around eBay for a used analog adjustable PSU cause you can get a lot of amps for next to nothing (of course they are sold as-is, so you will need to test before using it on the diode).

As far as a psu goes, I was gonna rewind a microwave oven transformer to get enough current to run the diode.  I thought of a good way to colimate it, ill use a video camera 20 foot away from me aimed at the target (2 inches from the dot) so I can see the dot, while running at low power. that is if I can make it a dot! :D :P Being a fiber, I would think it would collimate a lot better than one of those 100 watt diodes! and it should also have a circular beam pattern.

I definately wouldnt pay no 700 dollars for it!, It will probabky burn stuff, but not like a single mode diode would... I still havnt built a power supply for mine...

need lots of amps? but no $$$$? i tried once a battery-charger (for my car); or a cheap electrode-welder (is actually low voltage high amp transformer)
make a descent rectifier et voila!
 
The bar arrays do have some rudimentary collimation inside the works. Apparently they use at least enough lens to coax the power into a single beam that is near circular. That's the only way it would be useful coming out of the fiber.

I have one of the 3 Watt fiber coupled diodes I have not yet powered up (lacking eye protection so far). This one is tiny, a single diode mounted in a cylinder of brass like this one:

The beam should diverge out of the end of the fiber similar to the fiber not being there. You in effect moved the output of the diode in space by the length of your fiber, though the beam coming out should be at least a circle. (I believe about 140mrad divergence uncollimated.)
 
I have one of those also. And havnt had very good luck with it, I can barely burn tape with it at 3.5 amps... Im going to try taking the fiber out and geting to the diode when I get enough time to do it...

Max, have you looked into lead / acid cell batteries? They have such a low internal resistance, that 30amps+ would be easily obtainable. Using 1 or 2 diesel engine glowplugs in series on a 6v motorbike battery would easily give you the required voltage drop, while maintaining a good current (not pretty I agree, but would give you a taster of the full power of this)

I have lots of resistors, but not a big enough battery... I thought about testing it with a car betery and .5 ohm resistor.

Does anyone have any info and pics of a C-mount with fast Axis Lens
in action and any information on the setup you used, I may be buying this 2000mw one soon.

I actually plan on purchasing a 2%Nd:YVO4 Laser crystal ans a KTP Laser crystal to see if I can make a killer greeny. [smiley=evil.gif]
