Heat the acid and add corn starch maybe? the heated acid will also react with the anodize faster so less can be used. at least in theory.

perhaps drizzle some on a piece of parchment paper and roll the barrel over it. you might be able to get a little more creative with this method as far as splash design goes. just remember that the nail polish will be the negative of what you want. anything under the nail polish wont come off...
