That's impressive, though not surprising. Seems to be a correlation between power and lifespan. That sort of diode was likely designed to be used in barcode scanners and other devices were a long lived laser light bulb is required.

It's unfortunate the recipe used to make red laser diodes cannot be tweaked to freqs higher than ~635nm. No orange LDs :( DPSS will get one amber.. however expensive, fragile and inefficient.

I had to sand down the flange on the Meredith housing, and glue the optical assembly together. Instead of using the spring. There was not enough space between the optics and the diode for the spring to fit.

Very bad luck. Only the IR side of this diode fired. So three wrecked diodes in a row, the worse luck I've ever had. The HP sealed diode was a victim of the 'DDL' circuit. One of the gator clips attached to the diode, while I was metering it, moved.. the capacitor then killed it. :( A known...

These closed can diodes, which are good for pointers, appear to be becoming scarce. HP drive was 10 years old. Sigh.
I believe the outermost diode on the sled's the red one. At least the lens coatings for it are blue. It's got a 'L8Y424L' on the side of the can. Nice sealed diode.

Failure. Unable to unsolder circuit board, rear of diode. Legs ripped out. :( In picture I'd scoured down back of diode, however could not get enough purchase to reattach legs.
I'm now moving on to the internal drive in my 2005 Compaq. Very exciting, I know.

Both sled optics easily popped using a jewelers flathead screwdriver. Blue coated, when resting flat side down, directly on top of laser diode (image below), focused the laser.. however focus point no more than an inch or two from the diode!! At greater than half a foot away very out of focus...
I finished soldering things up, diode still lases.
Now, unfortunately, I cannot get the LD focused. With Meredith housing screwed as close to diode as it would go, with flange sanded down, nowhere near focus. Then I rested the Meredith acrylic optic on top of the LD.. still not focused.
