I think this happends when the cristal is overheat. Sometimes we can see it happen in the overdrive green laser. And i think laserglow will tell you they don't suggest to run your laser this long.

I like this laser. I have the same version but it's 140mw.

I think maybe is your balloon's color. I can use my green laser pop a red balloon but i can't do it with the green one. So color does matter.

I think this laser is underspec. I have a 250mwlaser and it can't light any matches because the beam is bigger then the match. I was very disappointed at the moment, but that laser is not design to burn things up anyway.

Sometimes it's just because the leaking IR from the laser cause the burning. But in this case if the laser is not too weak focus the beam is the good way to concentrate the energy. My 50mwlaser can smoke black paper and cut the tape without focusing the beam so it's not unusual that 5mw laser...

I like the shape of the laser. You can put the front glass and O-ring on and it will be water resistent. i'm just wondering how can we minimize the beam divergence?? I really like the 0.6mrad one. :)

Actually don't worried about the IR comming out fron your laser. It is not very strong from the laser is under 100mw. Besides you laser is only 5mw, so i really think the IR filter is not necessary. :)

If the beam divergence is going up to 45 degree. i think it's the lens problem. some of my laser, they don't assemble lens very well. sometimes they will drop out from the host. Like Benm said the mode hopping can't cause the 45 degree beam divergence.
