That's very interesting. It looks like the lenses are attached to an enclose diode. I think these came from a RGB projector. And since RGB projectors use fibers I wonder if those lenses might be part used for coupling.

Yup AR is very important. I did a test to see how much loss you get using a 520nm lens and a 650nm lens on a 445nm diode and it's a pretty significant loss. Plus light boucle back is the fastest way to kill a diode.
