you're going to run into a voltage shortage running a 12x off of two li-ions with any linear current regulator: 6Vf + 2.3VDo (at least) is more than what two Lions can reliably supply while being drawn

Depends heavily on your definition of 'cool' I guess; personally I'm a little tired of looking at black "C6-like" hosts but here's another DIY (gutted) one from DX for 12$ I also have a WF-502B on the way since it was really cheap ($6 on clearance right now), but I'm not 100% what it's form...

I should add a tiny disclaimer about this light for the detail-sticklers: there are a few minor manufacturing errors, like: some of the decorative circular depressions it has along two bands aren't full circles. This can give a bit of a 'cheapish' feel to the host, if you notice such things...

Those are vastly different diodes; choosing between them depends on what you want your laser for: good looking spot? beam visibility? burn power? ease of build? power efficiency? price...
