I think a feebay cheap greenie pen style would suffice for astronomy, as they are most often overspec. Unless you really want to pay extra for just the look. Also a custom build from a forum member is a good option.

Maybe all you need is a little break. You will start appreciating your lasers once you find out what would it be like without having them. Or move up the food, errr I mean power chain :D

Does it need to be handheld? You should give us some more info... I don't see why the laser would be kept on for more than 5 mins without letting it to cool for a bit. Well, you can have custom built handheld laser with big heat sink...

For green lasers in his preferred power range, laserbtb is the best choice. If he doesn't have money for that, he could always buy a few greenies from feebay...

Well, you can under-drive the 9mm one to get much longer expected life of the LD. Everything over 500mW is very dangerous, so 1W or 2W will both damage your eyes (and stuff) without safety equipment and precautions.
