what is the risk of frying the diode? can frying it be prevented by turning it on for short amounts of time, like 10-20 seconds?

is it possible to extract the diode (or whatever lasing medium is in it) from a mouse and use it for a diy laser?

i recently extracted a strange looking 10 prong diode from a cd player, can anyone enlighten me as to how i can hook this up or what it is?

i just bought this pot: 10k-ohm-15-turn-cermet-potentiometer-trimmer from radioshack im not sure if it works for this circuit or how to hook it up, can someone pm me on this?

what do u think the risk is for the diode to burn out? and is is possible to fit a potentiometer into the minimag? i tried this mod once but the laser wouldn't turn off by spinning the top of the minimag and trying to fix it, I broke off both pins of the diode. :'(
