    My newest Argon Arrived!

Pic will follow tonight - I just used my lunch hour to pull it out and do a quick test. Came out of a Beckman 488nm Laser Module.. Everything is there - fan, PSU, head, nice little electrical connection block... This one is single line only. Model 2212-4slbk... Specs say 4mw... yeah right...

You think lasers are a for fun?

If you read his posts he said that he has to read text by using his peripheral vision, same thing with viewing anything, he has to use the edges of his vision as the middle of his vision has been destroyed.

Some Brewster shots for the Gassy side of LPF

Very cool - although I'll admit I only understand the physics behind about 50-70% of what your doing here... I wish you lived closer so we could meet up and have a detailed discussion - I'm very interested in what your doing as well as what Bloom has done to get additional lines out of his...

    More gas whitelight

Thanks - I was going to start a thread on the setup, but I'll just get into it here.. :) As to time invested, its a lot more than needed - due to lots of trial and error. I have two kids - a 4 and 3 year old, and I just tinker in the basement while they play with my tools and wood scraps, so...

    More gas whitelight

Thanks guys! I'll admit, there was a bit of tweaking in Lightroom. These were 30 second exposures at around f8. I would start the exposure then light a match and blow it out into the beams... Took a few tries.. I need to get some glycerine and use that for fog instead..

Rotary three phase convertor for large argon?

Just wondering if anyone uses one of these for a large argon like the lexels?

    Confessions of a LPF addict

My addiction has gone to a whole 'mother level as of late... Over the weekend I converted my main workbench to be an optical bench - approx 5' X 3' workspace. I have ordered two more kinematic mounts and just today I ordered another Beckman laser module to scavenge the Argon from... And I...

PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please sub

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please Just for the new folks who may be reading this... There are no guarantee's with the ebay auction - it may or may not work... most likely will take some DIY to get running. Mine wouldn't lase out of the box...

PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please sub

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please Sorry spaz - but I had to post this... There will be a JDSU Argon in this with PSU and fan. I negotiated the seller down to an offer of $120, but just dont have the cash at the moment... so if you offer that...

(hypothetical) Running an Argon-Ion Laser in the cold?

More research... albeit not in depth... Looks like ammonia is used as a refrigerant - i.e. similar to freon and r134a.. in a compressor style refrigeration system. The application I'm referring to is a direct submersion system with no pressure, but direct thermal transfer. Im sure that in...

(hypothetical) Running an Argon-Ion Laser in the cold?

Nah - no foot in mouth.. ;) There are specific applications I'm sure.. I had to research the oil side of things. It turns out the "Non-Conductive" fluids they use in typical pc-cooling aren't really non-conductive. Thats what led me to the mineral oil and transformer oil idea... Its funny -...

(hypothetical) Running an Argon-Ion Laser in the cold?

I don't think corrosion would be an issue as its a mineral oil solution. The oil either would have to be filtered or changed periodically as the heat will degrade it over time and it will get cloudy and collect particulate matter. I also don't think there would be a temp shift issue as the...

(hypothetical) Running an Argon-Ion Laser in the cold?

THis topic has me thinking about a interesting experiment... What about using non-conductive liquid coolant? Submerge the head in the coolant and then use a pump to circulate the coolant.... I would imagine it would be a *lot* more efficient at cooling... the question is, would the coolant...

    Confessions of a LPF addict

I'll admit - I've got it bad for low wattage gas lasers... real bad... like I lusted after the old 0.8mw metrologic HeNe in the Edmund Scientific catalog back in the 80's bad... I built my first proper laser in college with my meager weekly paycheck from working in the computer lab - a 3mw HeNe...

Argon Ion and Helium Neon Beamshots!

Yup - they are very thin - the argon is razor sharp. The HeNe spreads a little bit.. Thanks everyone - I thought you'd all like the pics.. I'm totally loving the Argon especially! As I said in my other thread on cooling, I got my system tuned in today and managed to get 42mw out of her! JDSU...

More info regarding cooling for argons - and a question for others..

To answer your question - no idea... I don't have a temp gauge to measure the exhaust. But I can tell you that it was uncomfortably warm in the exit airstream, and the head was nearly too hot to touch when run at max. Hmmm. specific heat - I think I remember that... but its been a long time...

More info regarding cooling for argons - and a question for others..

So - I've been digging into the cooling side of things. Specifically, because my argon is still having thermal shutdown issues when running above 20mw. I currently have a 6" and an 8" inline duct booster fan in series. The 6" pulls 250cfm in free air, and the 8" pulls 500cfm in free air...
