    Often used abbrevations and acronyms

This is indeed very helpful. When I try to cross read some older topics where the veterans chat freely, I now have a cheat sheet handy. I'm quite good in catching up on technical topics.

and this one even is a sticky. :banghead:

    Often used abbrevations and acronyms

Thanks for kicking me into the right direction. I tried the search on a couple of possible keywords with "no result". It helps when you know what you are looking for. Probably the search engine filters a couple of often used "fill words" from the search. Bad for looking up a "fillword". ;)

    Often used abbrevations and acronyms

Since I'm pretty new with this stuff and the communinty here, I have a hard time to understand some messages. There are some abbrevations that are used quite often and some of them I already have deciphered. I do know general forum shortcuts but this forum uses a lot of topic specific...

Quick status update: The pointer I ordered did arrive today. Works as advertized. I cannot measure the power, but it sticks a bright green bar into the sky, clearly visible from behind. More than enough power to point at the stars. I will ask my wife for help in a dark night to judge how big...

    Clear skies to you

I'm quite confident that "well over 100mW" would get me serious troubles in no time if I would try to poke holes into the sky with it. A real eye catcher.

 Thats quite a distinct color. Could be an argument when some official mocks about using "green laser pointers". :p Those pure colors do have a certain attraction.

Posted pictures of laser color is as useless as an online Ishihara-test. Visible color of monochromatic light cannot successfully be captured by a digital camera with unknown spectral sensitivity, unknown color processing and unknown color reproduction at the user end by another tricolor device...

Yes, I realized something too. Ears and Eggs avatar is quite - i think "animating" is a good word...

I don't want to prolong this discustion whether or not a certain laser could cause harm to anyone at any distance. I cannot imagine that anybody can hold a laser steady enough to cause prolonged exposure to a flying plane. Even without doing the math, a beam sweeping across a plane 10 miles away...

    Clear skies to you

Thanks for the link. While I cannot imagine what kind of people are pointing a laser at some living creature/plane/helicopter I'm not one of them. None of the astronomers I know would be that silly to intentionally shoot at a plane. :banghead: Not primarely because it might disturb the pilot...

Mine? "smallfreak"? Sorry, I don't want to offend anyone. My older brother used to call me such. In contrast to him "BigFreak" :-D I use this occasionally to leave some breadcrumbs in the world that he might want to follow if he stumbles across them. A sad story not suitable to be placed here...

It just got a little tighter, as I found my trusted old Weller W 61 C soldering iron is the next one that went over jordan. After my LX-200 Telescope handbox (blewn capacitor took flexi cable with it). Luckily I got a replacement keypad and a handful of MLCC to replace the aged tantals. Now that...

    Clear skies to you

I spent a while on eBay to sort out the offers and I found a lot of 301 and 303 "lookalike" pointers that are advertized like "<1mW, high power, lights matches". This can only be nonsens, is it? Shouldn't these pieces be more or less quite powerful pointers, way beyond the <1mW range (and way...

Thanks fo the suggestions. I read some coments about the Laserlands 520nm 5mw pointer. That seem to be quite bright for the nominal values. For astronomy use the 5mW range of the tested pointers was not quite enough to have a group of people around the astronomer have a good sight on the beam...

    Clear skies to you

Hello RB, thanks for the welcome. I added my location to the profile. Good idea. I'm in Austria. Great place for Astronomy, as we have plenty of dark mountain sites and only moderate light pollution. Not comparable to namibia, but a dark site within reach from virtually any place when there...

    Clear skies to you

Hello there :-) I've learned that no matter what problem you might have, there is a forum out there that handles just that. So there you are. As my headline might suggest, my background is astronomy. I'm not a Laser power junkie, although I can share the fascination of the matter - I'm just...
