You should at least use a resistor, this thing is not gonna last long, im surprised it even lit up long enough to take pictures. ;) Why go through the trouble of building it at all if it lasts 3 minutes? Ive seen diodes get connected straight to battery's by people that didn't know any better...

Thats really stupid. If they ban all lasers, then they also need to ban pellet guns, air guns, knifes, rocks, tools, and anything else than can be used as a weapon. People can be so stupid. >:(

Remember, there is also 1064nm light present after the first crystal... :o I would be careful, and test them with a power meter and the correct filters. Your eyes are worth to much to go on a hunch. I can see the red dot without my goggles, but with them on, I can not.

Re: Sony Optarc flop.  DON'T GET THIS. I have an ir diode from some drive, I don't remember what it came out of, but it does much more than Ive heard people say it should, its doing 200mw's. so yes, these might be worth playing with, you might be able to come up with an adapter that mounts it...

Its always going to diverge some, but if you let the beam expand a little before you collimate it, it will be less diverging. In my 2w laser, I used an old telescope eyepiece to collimate it, the focal length is about 1.25 inches. try using a lens that allows it to expand a bit before...

Re: Sony Optarc flop.  DON'T GET THIS. I have 3 of these. These drives suck as dvd burners also! Not good for diodes, not good to burn discs, useless drives, they might as well be readers only. one out of 3 discs I make with any of these is a coaster. :(

room for a battery! Thats the same kind of case I used to make my laser, In fact those old scsi boxes are GREAT for building things in. also, these little switch boxes for printers, and monitors work great to build in if you dont have a real project box. They are usually stronger, made of metal...
