My Jayrob 18650/Daguin 445nm Diode Build (many pictures)

Oh yeah =P - it's great when I show it to a friend and he's like "Wow, where did you get that" "Oh, you know, I just BUILT it!"

    Arctic not very powerful

Mine is instant. I can literally write. Not as fast as with a pen, but close. I can burn through white cloth as well, like a blanket. Much slower though. EDIT: Jesus Christ, that's huge. How do I resize that?

Is a rectangular or a round beam better?

Circular is usually considered better, simply because it boasts a "Higher beam quality," but as random said, you probably won't notice anyway.

My Jayrob 18650/Daguin 445nm Diode Build (many pictures)

Special thanks to Jayrob, Daguin, Ash, and all those other people who answered my endless questions. I'm just going to upload all these photos without a description, I'm sure you guys know what it all is. If you have any questions about my build let me know. Click them for a larger image.

    Arctic not very powerful

My focused DIY build (well under a watt) burns white paper.

Powering A140 Diode in 18650 Kit with Alternate Battery

Ah okay, I've figured everything out. I had the lens in backwards. Then I fixed my focus issue by just slowly adjusting the module in the heatsink. We now have a nice round dot. I bet this will fix my power issues (I was only getting 500-600mw) as well. Ash, I'm forever indebted to you...

Powering A140 Diode in 18650 Kit with Alternate Battery

There is a cylindrical module. At one end of this module there is a lens. The side with the lens is screwed into the EzFocus adaptor so that the lens is closest to the adaptor (The lens side faces out of the laser, rather than towards the diode. As I said right now I can't unscrew it. trying to...

Powering A140 Diode in 18650 Kit with Alternate Battery

I have a lens that looks like this ------...........| ....lens.-->.....| ------...........| The lens sits at the end of a cylindrical module with threads. I then thread it into the EzFocus adaptor represented by the vertical line in the direction of the arrow. Is that backwards? EDIT: Crap, I...

    Perceiving 445nm

The multiple responses describing blue almost make me question my diode. Everyone that I ask also sees violet (when shot into the black night sky). But I see blue only when reflected off of a white surface.

Why so much hate on lasers?

Ehh, in our lab we've got multiple lasers at well over 100-150 watts...

    Perceiving 445nm

I've only actually looked at the beam outdoors (shining it into the sky). I don't have anywhere to shine it inside without it being potentially eye damaging...

    Perceiving 445nm

I think there was another thread about it somewhere, entitled "How do YOU see 445" but I can't find it - So I'm going to ask the question again! I see 445nm as almost a brighter 405nm, completely purple, but just a bit lighter and brighter. I see 0% blue in 445, nothing like what pictures show.

Powering A140 Diode in 18650 Kit with Alternate Battery

Ah. I tried doing that, but at long distances the dot is very, VERY large. And the beam distribution is not very Gaussian, it looks alot like the picture of the 445 laser through the 405 lens, the picture is in a thread entitled something like 405-G-1 vs 445 AixiZ (I can't find it!) Also, great...

Powering A140 Diode in 18650 Kit with Alternate Battery

It's alive! Terrible divergence, but it's working. I'm working on getting the focus adjusted - it looks like this laser is going to be mostly for burning, as it gets severly out of focus quickly. I'm not sure how to focus it to infinity, as I've heard done. Any comments on that?

Why so much hate on lasers?

Regarding a pilot, there is a safety story we tell at the lab I work at (truth or not, I'm not sure). A guy once borrowing a very high powered laser from the lab to trim a tree he couldn't reach - with no thought to the beam that was going into the atmosphere. (It was also a laser that was...

Powering A140 Diode in 18650 Kit with Alternate Battery

Re: Use the Edit and Multiquote buttons When you say Nimh, do you just mean AA? Would 3 AA's actually power this thing? (I can be patient if I need too, but the suspense is killing me =P I didn't do that, thanks for the tip. I read that, just wasn't aware of what it meant in terms of my...

Powering A140 Diode in 18650 Kit with Alternate Battery

Great ideas both, I'll see what if I can find any rare earth magnets at the lab today, and if not I'll just spring for foil. Thanks guys! EDIT: Tried it with the aluminum foil, and the laser did not work. So I either screwed something up in the build, or the battery isn't good enough to power...

How the mW affect to the laser beam range ?

Ah. Very interesting, I didn't know that.
