The HeNe is well known for it's beam quality. Usually they have close to 1 M^2 and very low divergence. Considered the best quality beams. That's why they are often used for alignment.

I think that may be it. I get massive headaches whenever I turn it on. Even if I'm not looking at the dot (which looks super funky and grainy). Oh, and I can see the beam at night...I think this might be pretty powerful.

Beam Profile would be the most important I could think of. I recently did it in a lab with a the scanning knife-edge technique, but you may not have those resources. That would allow you to find the divergence, beam diameter at any point, and beam quality (m^2). Or you could just buy a beam...
