I believe you are on the right track with your suspicions. For cutting steel with lasers they generally use CO2 lasers which are easily obtained in the houndreds of watts. Then they use precise optics to focus it down to a point that is so concentrated it burns like millions of suns in one spot...

Well with it in the condition that you say it's in I would say replace it if you can! This looks like it may even be from somewhere like boblasers which doesn't have the best reputation. Maybe get some pictures of the beam splitting? I have seen any good TEM pictures before besides our usual TEM00

yeah i have one of those sitting on my desk. too lazy to take the PCB board off of it since there are two layers that the prongs go through. i pulled mine from an old cd burner

Maybe try a resistor on one of the battery connections, like down in the case between the spring and the case. It would cause it to act like low batteries but without needing to tear it apart or using low batteries.

Re: I got my DX 5mw green to cut a bag!!(no pot mo DX 5mW are actually killer! ;D I got my 5mW to easily pop a balloon with a lens and tested it using a Coherent Field Mate to get a peak of over 15mW! It Steadied out around 13mW though. ::)

Yeah I didn't have too much time to look into them but I figured they were rechargeable because it was in an old computer, was rated for 3.6V and still showed 3.65V on a multimeter. Maybe if you could find a rechargeable version it would be great! ;D

Everyone has said it but I will again. Get the True 30mW! They can do many of the same things and the price difference is where it's at. Calculated the True 30mW is the best dollar per mW ratio.
