    Using lasers for ground markings

Hi Dwayne, Sounds interesting, I think you would be looking at a laser projector, probably a reasonably powerful one that can mix various laser colours into white. Colours other than white would be simpler / cheaper, although this is a requirement by the sounds of it? Best "bang for buck"...

    Who here's from Australia?

Welcome Billiam! Which state are you in? There are quite of us here from Australia. You can still legally own & import lab-style lasers & parts, just pointers >1mW are illegal to import. Easiest is to bring in the parts and build yourself if you have the skills. Some members have bought them...

    Simple Solder Question :P

When I first heard about it I was in Townsville and I we cleaned Jaycar out of kg rolls! That was 4 years ago and you can still get it, so I'm ever hopeful!

video - transmission hologram of marbles

That's awesome. I always marveled at laser holography but never could work out an easy way to do it!

Where to get PCB battery contacts?

Yeah, I recently got a few of Moh's round linear boards and still have some originals from hosts, but was thinking of building my own. But then I wanted a decent boost driver and thought I may as well do that... I can etch a few by hand if anyone wants 1 or two (especially in AU) but I could...

    Simple Solder Question :P

Use lead solder its much easier to use and melts lower - as Cyparagon (and theory) suggests 60/40 (%tin/lead) is pretty good. In the industry we are supposed to use lead free solder, its better for the environment and doesn't hurt you if you breathe it's vapors. I can use it now, but I hate...

GB: 4$ heatsinks, 1.5$ aluminum modules AND more!

US gallons are different to imperial (British) gallons which we used here. 1 litre is 4.54 imperial gallons. A mile is 1.6km and 60mph = 100kmph. Sorry, back to the thread...

Playing with my new 40W laser

Not how this would work with a laser, but this is how we used to do it in the the RF world: Back when GHz range power meters were expensive I ran RF through 100m or so of very lossy coax (RG-174) in an esky filled with a measured amount of ice water at zero degrees C. Most of the RF was...

GB: 4$ heatsinks, 1.5$ aluminum modules AND more!

Interesting that French-Canadians talk in lbs! Australia changed to the metric system when I was very young in the 1970's. I think in kg and km (which are the official units here) but think in inches (although we are officially metric) as I was trained as a fitter and turner and all the...

    Question about power rating clickie.

Woah, looks like I missed a fair bit in this time zone while I was at work... Yes I apologize for sabotaging the thread, I like people to understand things however I suspect this is becoming a debate of semantics rather than serving any educational purpose. Cyparagon, your diagram shows the...

Playing with my new 40W laser

Wow, that's awesome! What does the power supply draw? I have read they can be up to about 20% efficient, that should give you an absolute maximum power rating i guess.

    Question about power rating clickie.

Nope, ground has nothing to do with it (unless it forms part of the circuit). In the examples you give ground does not form part of the circuit and the osciloscope is not measuring anything with resepct to ground. Lifting the ground will not change anything (unless there is some weired control...

    My first Argon laser

Melbourne is closer for me (3 hours) but I think Sydney's where the majority of members are, and its not the end of the world to drive to Sydney from Brisbane. Maybe we should put a feel er out? Venue? I can only see about 20 going, but a feeler may stir things up.

What is your internet connection speed?

We use 3G modems in a piece of equipment at work for remote audio broadcasts. Worked fantastic for 5 years, but we have been having huge problems for the last 6 months or so in all areas. I trialed some Telstra 4G modems here and was averaging 35Mb up and 15Mb down. One day it tested at 50Mb...

    Question about power rating clickie.

If you measure the two poles of an AC generator, one is positive for one half of the cycle and negative for the other half of the cycle and the other pole likewise changes polarity. Hence electrons flow in one direction of half the cycle and the opposite direction for the second half of the...

    My first Argon laser

Geez half of NSW is still awake! Saw your post after mine Adrian. It would be good to do something here LEM wise, pointer legalities aside. And the vast majority of active members are on the east cost. Looks like we have the interest (all 10 of us or so). @vk2fro - the girlfriend left me last...

    My first Argon laser

You are up late Ben! Yes was thinking of an arduino or picaxe solution, been concentrating on other things lately. I have several serial LCD's (i2c and rs232) in the junk box. I have only fired it up a few times in the last few weeks. Compared to my 100mW 473nm labby and stupidly bright 300mW...

    Question about power rating clickie.

Yes, AC current reverses direction every cycle, pulsed DC only flows in one direction. DC maintains an arc better because the AC arc is "quenched" every half cycle by the opposite flow. In laymans terms, it takes time to build up the arc again in the opposite direction.

    The GLG3078 project :D

Has it got a filler tube on it (sealed copper tube)? As long as the filament is intact you may be able to find someone with lab grade argon and a vacuum pump to re-gas it. I have heard it's possible...
