I've bought parts and heads in from Rayfoss before but whole laser pointers are hit and miss. People have got them confiscated, but then again sometimes they get through. Better off building your own. I wish I had $10 for every PM I've had from an aussie newb asking if I'll build them a laser...

I missed this thread- although I have been away for a few weeks. Awesome build mate! Good on you for getting it in such a small host, I would have whimped out and gone for something huge like a maglight. We will need to have that Mini LEM sooner or later!

If you search the forums you can find some dummy load designs, most use a resistor and some diodes (number of diodes depends on the laser forward voltage, for IR you would want two or 3 in series), have a look in the Drivers, Test loads and Power Supplies section of the forum. IR diodes have a...

Here is mine with my hand for comparison. The Laserbee hovers between 1mW and 2mW so I'm calling it 1.5mW. It actually flickers a bit and a pink discharge flashes up in the main tube outside the capillary so I think its going "gassy" but hey, it was a $40 tube and it looks lovely:
