I'm sure you know of it, but I still recommend Jayrob's kit for this project. You can get the cheap option too (no front piece, ~20 bucks less!).

OEM Laser Systems is your best bet. The owner (?) of the site is on this forum, FrothyChimp. I'm sure he will be in this thread soon to explain why his are best for hobbyists and why you shouldn't buy from cheap sources and a whole lot more. Let me call him: FROOOOOOTHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Try a battery just in case. Battery meters are likely to be measuring for 1.2 volts instead of 3.6 or whatever you're using. It's always helpful to TRY to take some advice before shutting it out because of an amateur reader.

Blue will be too much, violet will not be easy to see. You're best to go with green, and you wouldn't need much power, 100-200 mW for a distance of ~ 14 miles in the night or foggy sky.

Can you not just use the test load to set the driver, desolder the test load, solder the diode and power supply? I'm still quite unsure what kind of load you're talking about if it's going in the final build.
