Depends on what you want, For a basic low power pointer, a store bought laser is fine. If you want a burning laser, a custom built one can be both cheaper and more powerful

50 (49...) xmls would be better IMO, I highly doubt the china led is even close to 100 lumens/watt This is how I would do it: Have a regular PCB made with 7 long holes cut out of it. Get some copper strips to fill the holes Tin the copper strips and pcb, add the leds and reflow the whole thing...
