I tried using the objective lens out of a cd drive, it has a very short FP and throws a really tight beam.

looking at this customer image it looks like its voltage regulated. most led drivers are not very well regulated. (current wise) you could buy and try if you want :P you will need a oscilloscope to test it.

you measure them with a capacitance measuring DMM :P turn it to the 20uF setting you are looking for >8uF caps for the input and output filters

well i designed a board with high side current sensing using the lt6106. its 9 x 13.5mm there is a bottom ground layer as well. thats where the green vias go I haven't calculated resistances to set the current yet my samples from linear came today so i can make it and test it out.

to get desoldering braid to work, you need to apply some flux to it (to make solder stick to it. sometimes the braid has flux already in it) and heat it up with your iron while you push it onto whatever solder you want to suck up. its better to have your iron on high, so it heats up the braid...

if you are getting a reading of AC that means the driver is pulsing to drive the LED. this isn't good for lasers. if you want a driver that runs off a AA look around the experiments and modifications section. I have made one for the xbox hd-dvd diode and am working on one for other lasers also...

the datasheet does specifically call for low ESR ceramics. but tantalum's should work too, i used them on another similar driver with no problems

i doubt the boost circuits in those torches would be sutable for a laser. the regulation in them isn't very good. you could try using a linear regulator after the booster.

:-? i am pretty sure they make them, cos i have some, and they measure around 10uF... with the image scaling, when you press print, just type in 13% in the scale box under page setup if you are using windows, open the image in paint, go to page setup and change the scaling to 13%, press ok and...

there is no way the pump diode for a 5mw green would be 300mw my 30mW green has an input of 250mA at 2V. the pump would be operating at less than 300mW. probably expect 40-80mW pump in a 5mW green. I reckon you would be better off with a cd burner.

ah screw it just use the 555 in that circuit i linked to. its simple, and it does what you want. here is some good info on setting up a 555 and how to play around with duty cycle and freq http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/555timer.htm#astable its always fun playing around with analogue circuits...

you wouldn't flick the diode, you flick the solder off its pins using the soldering iron thats probably the way i would do it. solder braid is a bit troubling on stuff that isn't on a pcb
