50mw is probably best for astronomy purposes. DealExtreme: $32.04 Focusable 50mW Green Laser Pointer with Safety Key Lock (1*18650 Included) that's an up-to-spec 50mw that's very cheap. A lot of DX lasers aren't up to spec but that one is.

Seriously, you don't need an IR filter for a 100mw green. If you're not staring at the dot from 1cm away, or pointing it at anyones face, you'll be fine. That thing about catching IR reflection in the mirror or of a shiny surface: you'd see the green beam on your face, if there is no visible...

If you want a 200mw, that actually achieves 200mw, you will pay A LOT more than you will for a 100mw that actually achieves 100mw. A 100mw laser will pop balloons, light matches and smoke various black objects, and go as far as you need it do. I'd probably just buy a 100mw.

novalasers, dragonlasers, optontronics, etc, all sell good lasers but they're expensive. If laser pointers are legal in your country, just buy a 100mw 'true' from DX (and they're pretty close to 100mw) and two pairs of $6 OD5+ safety glases from focalprice

You can get OD5+ goggles that protect against green laser beams on focalprice for about $7. These won't filter IR but there generally isn't *that* much IR run off so it'll be fine unless you look directly into the beam, which would be stupid.

Hey, do you know much about getting lasers into Australia? I'm looking at importing a few ready-made lasers into Australia, but don't know what to do to get them past customs -- should I tell them to remove the diode/lens and put it into a separate package? Cheers!

If you widened the beam, you would no longer be sending out UV. And in any case you're not sending out electrons. How do you suppose you electrify photons? Sorry if I've missed a point here.

Sorry for the double post, just wanted to note that it's *only* pointers that are illegal here, you can import a 4KW industrial laser fine, it just has to not be a pointer. The 'not a pointer' rule also applies to diodes.

It won't cause eye damage under normal use. Looking at the dot close up for ages could give you eye damage, and staring directly into it will give you eye damage, but apart from that, no, it won't give you eye damage. And yes, anything over 5mw is illegal in the USA.
