You can measure a laser with a laser power meter. The 200mW green laser from DX is normally around 90-130mW IIRC.

If you remember the battery connect point then you can check for continuity between one of the pins to the diode and spring. For example if the spring is + then test for continuity between the spring and and one of the voltage out, which ever pin has continuity that is you diode +.

Yeah but still its a 35-40 dollar diode and a 20 dollar driver for 40 dollars.
