The case will provide a negative thru the switch. The diode negative terminal is probably soldered to the diode's case.

Re: why...why...WHY!!! How acurate is the test loa If the batteries are good, and since you are using a rkstr driver, open the circuit and measure the amperage. You can remove the tail cap and measure between the negative of the cell and the battery case if that apply's to your host.

There are so many variables that can effect the lifespan of a diode. There are no guaranties. Are you sure it's dead? Have you checked voltage? Did a solder connection come loose? For it to work then not could stem from incorrect amperage or maybe something loose, or maybe battery voltage/...

I think it's safe to say the DDL driver (if built properly) will not fry the diode
