I´m pretty sure you have a burning laser on that DVD. Any DVD Re-Writable requires a powerfull laser to delete data. Feed it with 300mA and see how it reacts.

To keep things simple, dont use a pot. Just use one 3 Ohm res or 2x 6 Ohms res in parallel. That Will give you around 420mA. Dont run your laser more than 20 sec at a time. Let ir cool for 15 sec or so. Heatsinking the module is recommended.

Don´t like that flashlight at all xP. But one thing is for sure, it makes it easier to focus :D
