I believe what has happened here is they inserted the batteries the wrong way around causing the photons to get polarized in the wrong direction resulting in them come out of the wrong end.

I recently got that same pair from Amazon, they do seem to work pretty well for 473, 405, and decently for 532 as well. Not bad at all for a few dollars as long as you're not using anything too high powered.

You really should be careful with that IR idea, IR can be very harmful to your eyes and increase the risk of damage as well as needing more specific safety glasses. Have you gotten a pair of glasses for your blue?
