Try using a small pair of wire cutters or something, and eat away at the side of the heatsink until you reach the edge of the diode, then repeat on the opposite side and pull the diode out, or if you can't pull it out after cutting away, hold each side of the heatsink with a pair of pliers and...

Go read around on the forum a bit and come back because trying to diagnose whats wrong with the laser from a poor picture, vague information and a diode that isn't a standard one is next to impossible. Do you even know what an open can diode is? Kendall's a top man, no problem ordering from his site a while ago.

Nice post, although that should be mW's, since most lasers are around that range, maybe going upto a a watt or more with the arrival of 445nm diodes. 1000mW = 1W 1000W = 1kW :)
