what is the importance of good heat sinking?

Normally, heat sinking would become more important, the harder you intend to drive the diode. If you were driving a PHR real hard, at say, 175mA and outputting 140mW (just an example), you would want good heat sinking because it might only run for a few hours total, even then, and a key chain...

what is the importance of good heat sinking?

Pretty good summary! Don't forget when calculating the power dissipation in the Laser diode, to subtract the Optical Power Output from the total power, as it is dissipated outside the LD... ;)

Adjust your laser's output on the fly(digital pot)

Re: Adjust your laser's output on the fly(digital What provides the regulated current to the LD? Do you have a block diagram? :-?

Double or triple the power of 5mW DX pointer!!

It would be very difficult to locate another crystal assy that would work as a drop-in replacement, except out of another similar laser, but the good news is that I just tested 4 more of these 5mW units from DX and they ALL peak at over 30mW, as-is, with a single lithium cell. Here is the data...

    268mW 6X Key Chain Blu-ray! (With FlexDrive!) - Awesome!

Re: Key Chain Blu-ray... With FlexDrive! Really nice work, jayrob! :D Also, very educational - first time I've seen 10180 batteries. They seem to be out of stock everywhere though... :(

    My first PHR build.

Nice work! It's always good to see somebody NOT blowing up their first diode ;) That's how my last dead 4X met it's end :-[

    my 6X blu-ray sled observs - 295mW !! (then death)

Re: my 6X blu-ray sled observs - 295mW !! (then de For some reason, business owners are often a bit touchy this time of year... ;) I just figure the little 6X bastards took a LONG time to get here, so I'm gonna make damn sure they suffer at least That long before they die! Otherwise I have...

    my 6X blu-ray sled observs - 295mW !! (then death)

Re: my 6X blu-ray sled observs - 295mW !! (then de Here is a comparison of my first 6X plotted against Igor's original 6X: This particular diode has very low light leakage compared to the second one I harvested, but the second one is not plotted (yet).

    New high power 405nm diode?

Wow, how much current to get the 226mW out of the Nichia? :o

    New high power 405nm diode?

If PHR's are rated for 30mW CW, then we are pushing them to 6 - 8 times their ratings! :o So, if 6X and Nichia are that tough, will your graph end at 900mW raw output? :)

Double or triple the power of 5mW DX pointer!!

DX sells at least one charger that accepts these, but it is really made for protected cells, so does not quite charge them up all the way - only to 3.8 or 3.9V, so I put them in my 18650 charger with a bunch of those little magnetic spacers, to charge them to 4.3V. I don't think it is real...

    New high power 405nm diode?

Igor will drive it harder,a and harder until it reaches it's first "kink" as he calls it. It may have been a virgin diode when he started... ;) Edit: What, No Kink? :-?

    New high power 405nm diode?

You wouldn't be playing with Susie's diode now, would you? ::)

    New high power 405nm diode?

Okay, granted, a new one would be risky, but say you should accidentally COD one during testing, it might still be electrically viable for this test... ;)

    Key Lock is Broken...

Most of these do unscrew, but are very tightly screwed together. You could try clamping it in a vise using something soft like pine-wood carved out to fit, as a cushion, to get a better grip on the head. If you can't do that, you may have to send it back for repair...

    Help mw with rechargable batteries

Not sure what a C9000 is, but generally C/10 is considered a safe charge rate. For 2000mAH batts that would be 200mAH. However, if it's a "smart" charger, you could charge them at a higher rate, but 2000mA may tend to overheat the cells. ;) Not sure what you mean by this. If you are...
