Thanks docjohn. :) As far as I know, it can't. But the buttons are there incase you should ever want to recalibrate it with another meter, or if you ever send it back to Jerry for upgrades etc.. he may need to recalibrate it for you after the upgrades. He upgraded mine with the data logging...

The buttons are for calibration. You can always take it apart if you ever need to re-calibrate it. Mine are enclosed inside the box:

If you plan on plugging your diode directly into a mag lite (like in the KipKay or whatever video) you'll be wasting your time and money. It may work for a little while but it wont last long without a driver to regulate the current. If you wanna build one yourself, I suggest reading the DIY MXDL...

Re: Uber-noob question. It is possible if your diode has pins long enough to insert into a mini maglite (I'm sure you've seen that goofy "how to make a laser with a maglite " video), but honestly that mod is a waste of time and $$ as the unregulated current and lack of a heatsink will kill...
