    The Red Menace

Thanks! It fits in the hand perfectly, it's got a nice weight to it, and it delivers quite a punch at range. Balloons town wide will learn to fear me.

    The Red Menace

I finally finished my LPC-815 build. I managed to shrink my driver down to a fraction of its former size (my terrible, terrible soldering has improved greatly :undecided: ) and fit the whole thing in a small project box. Certainly doesn't compare to some of the things I've seen here, but I'm...

    Power Estimation

Thanks for the advice -- I guess I'm lucky I didn't kill my diode!

    Power Estimation

Is it safe to take a mA reading across the cap/diode (which I have very closely connected)? I notice the diode dims when I try, and I'm afraid of accidentally shorting the cap through the LD...

    Indirect Viewing for laser safety

Well, yeah -- they're goofy as hell. Of course, since they're the only eye protection I have, I'll be the only one in the same room as the laser anyway! Besides, let's face it: if you spend much of your free time building handheld lasers, it probably isn't _this_ that's going to push your...

    Indirect Viewing for laser safety

    Yeah, yeah -- works though!

    The Red Menace

Yeah, I think it's just a matter of treating tissue paper in a 1:1 sulfuric/nitric acid bath, then washing it and air-drying it. I've seen this recipe being kicked around: How to Make Flash Paper | eHow.com ..but I make absolutely no claims to its effectiveness. Sounds dangerous, in any case...

    Indirect Viewing for laser safety

Lately, I've been experimenting with a red LOC diode whose output I estimate at about 150 mW. I have no 650 nm glasses, and the power of the thing was pretty intimidating. So I came up with a solution that will benefit anyone with an iPhone and no access to safety glasses. Basically, I built a...

    The Red Menace

I used to manage the equipment for a company that did after-school science programs for elementary school kids, so I just nicked it from them. I'm running low at this point, though... It looks like you can order it from several places online, however. I know that around $10 for a sheet of 4 9X9"...

    The Red Menace

Ah - I see your point. I just soldered the diode to the DDL circuit I've been using as a testbed, so it's not built into anything cool yet -- I wanted to make sure I hadn't killed the diode during the difficult, metal-twisting harvest. YouTube - LOC LPC I thought it was LED'd, at first, but...

    The Red Menace

Just finished testing my new LOC LPC-815 on my test driver. It is a thing of beauty! There's something pretty damn nice about lighting a piece of flash paper from literally across the room with a beam of light!! So. Very. Red! Should I be able to get that sort of range on a PHR at 125mA? I know...

    BluRay Lasergun

Would you then consider using a heat sink the laser equivalent of wrapping one's willy?

    BluRay Lasergun

Oooh, yes! I'm looking at Drlava's graph now...Is there any data on longevity at that current?

    BluRay Lasergun

This is my second build. Stuck a DDL driver circuit and a PHR LD in the casing of a cheap, pump-action paintball gun..Very satisfying to fire! http://laserpointerforums.com/members/dvorhagen/albums/my-lasers/1983-finished-gun/...

    Power Estimation

Actually, I didn't think you'd be able to get as accurate as 10%, just doing the math. I figured the driver circuit and LD would be too lossy to get a good estimation that way. I'm going to look into building/buying a laser meter once my bank account recovers from this latest laser-splurge :)

    Power Estimation

Heya, folks-- I'm trying to figure out an as-reliable-as-possible method for estimating the milli-wattage of a laser without a meter. I eventually intend to build one (though from what I've been reading, homebuilt power meters tend to be quite inaccurate), but in the meantime, I wonder if there...

    Yellow goggles, Blu-ray blocking

Got my yellow 405nm glasses today, and tried them out. Reduces the laser's apparent brightness *significantly*, even at its focal point! Very fast shipping, very cheap, and absolutely worth it for anyone who wants to play with the 100mW violet laser they just built without worrying about...

2D square barcodes on LD cans

This is really very cool, interesting stuff! Noob question, though: aren't the data sheets on these diodes readily available?

    405nm Eye Protection

Well, I'm thinking of the glasses as a last resort. Mostly, I want to use them when burning and generally playing around with my PHR, so I don't expose my eyes to too much super-bright, "diffuse", near-UV stuff. I don't intend to ever do anything that might result in a direct beam hit, but at...

    405nm Eye Protection

Actually, these look pretty much ideal for my purposes. http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/yellow-goggles-blu-ray-blocking-43262.html
