Interesting idea there, I have always had an affinity with ruby as a laseing medium. I understand your wanting to do this with a small piece, but I have heard that cooling a ruby medium can be difficult. And please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the first CW ruby laser need liquid nitrogen...

Definitely worth getting up early for! Sky watching is something i have always enjoyed, ever since I was a wee lad of about 8 years old! I also understand that comets Honda and Elenin will be close enough to be seen soon. But I don't believe they will be visible in the northern hemisphere...

^^^ You should be safe with most any type of clear plastic safety goggles, that wavelength cannot pass through regular glass or plastic!:beer: ( At least very quickly! )

Also, if you do decide to go the weed burning route with a laser or otherwise. Be sure you don't end up burning any poision ivy! You do not want ether yourself, or anyone else inhaling the smoke from these type plants! :eek:

Yes I think it is subjective, we as humans have a very narrow range of perception that our senses afford. Just the visual range in our eyes ( as you all know! ) is a tiny sliver of the total light wave range. I think we may be missing out on much that we just can't see!
