my dye laser project [ pic heavy ]

A quick update: I made my first attempt at running the laser. I poured 750ml of ethylene glycol into the reservoir. After that, the reservoir promptly emptied all over the garage floor.:banghead: That part connects the reservoir to the pump motor. It was damaged in shipping and was just...

be careful with the broken tube. the beryllium oxide dust is very toxic.

These are the Laws I think should be in place for lasers in the US

How does tighter restrictions equate to increased availability of lasers? This hobby is no where near large enough for laser shops.

So for my SSY-1, that would be ~10 times the price of the laser every year. And what about co2 laser cutters? They have incredibly high output powers but enough safety features to make them Class II. Why not just ban >5mW handheld lasers with no safety featur... OWAIT

pot modding a laserglow aries laser?

Why not just send it back? An Aries is an expensive laser to risk a diode transplant. Also, how are you sure the diodes is what failed?

Another update: I took some power graphs first 15 minutes: A 10 minute graph after it had been on for some time: After some warm up it does appear to be TEM00 though it has a parallel beam.

my dye laser project [ pic heavy ]

A quick update: I got my pump laser last Friday. It's a 750mW, however the beam isn't perfect. The coherent rep i talked to said i could expect ~5% efficiency which is piss poor. I will probably end up selling it and getting a laser with some better beam specs down the road. ^my labby...

my dye laser project [ pic heavy ]

I will be using a 0.5W DPSS, not ideal but it will do for now (it's all i can afford). I will likely end up selling it and getting a higher power. methanol - http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9927227 ethylene glycol - http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9927167 rhodamine 6g -...

my dye laser project [ pic heavy ]

The peak absorption wavelength for Rhodamine 6g is around 530nm. The 514nm line is the one that does all the work, 445nm goes straight through. I split the lines of my argon to show how each line is absorbed. (514nm at the top, 454nm at the bottom) The pump beam also needs to be focused...

You are partially right, what you are seeing is ethylene glycol (reagent grade) However, it is also mixed with dye dissolved in reagent grade methanol. I'll be using a dpss pump source. As for the price, I'll wait until i'm done spending money before I post the price.

High speed dye jet, it has been tested up to 32W pump power (8.5W output at 600nm iirc)

my dye laser project [ pic heavy ]

A few weeks ago, I decided to buy one of those 40W co2 tubes that are so popular around here. I quickly changed my mind and bought a dye laser instead. (Good thing my offer on a co2 tube got declined) Last Saturday, I got a package in the mail. This 54lb beast of a package was my dye head...

red 2-5mW laser heads on Ebay, anyone use these before?

100mW for how long? A fraction of a second? 5mW lasers are built to be run at 5mW, pot modding is only good for killing your laser.

I have experience with modules similar to these and <1mW red HeNes, you don't have to worry about beam visibility with fog.

    589nm (yellow) laser

I hear LG has far better QC than CNI, I hope that to be true. My PGL died after 2 weeks. My 589nm pen rattles and occasionally takes a few smacks to get running.

Infrared Lasers: Do They All Burn?

Wow! I never knew 1064nm DPSS lasers are cheaper and higher power than the 808nm pump source they use! Good thing efficiencies are often greater than 100%.

Laser for frying pest anemones in a reef aquarium

glass will just pass most of the light unless you are using a co2 laser (or other far infrared wavelength laser). however, the 50W co2 at my school won't cut all the way through glass like that. so unless you are going to use a LOT of power, you don't have to worry.

I'm scared to power this up. Opinions?

odd that coherent would label a 300mW laser as 1W Edit: looked at the data sheet, you're right. I still don't see why they use such a generic label for their lasers.
