    Anything about extraterrestrial life

While there are lots of propulsion technologies that provide a higher specific impulse than chemical rockets (liquid rockets have something like 4000 m/s effective exhaust velocity while ion thrusters have something around 20,000 m/s IIRC), chemical rockets are the only thing with a high enough...

    Best Red Diodes?

Awful waste of power, but it'd certainly make for a cool handheld if done right. Wasn't Wicked Lasers planning on making something like this?

    Anything about extraterrestrial life

He could also just be attention whoring, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Either way, unless he has an actual opinion or theory (even if it's unpopular), making such a post won't be positive for his rep count.

    Anything about extraterrestrial life

This is a mature board. If we disagree with what you have to say, we'll discuss it. That's what the thread is for. :)

where is the IR filter located on an S3 Krypton?

This should probably be in the "Tutorials, Help & Repairs" section, but it's not a big deal. If the mods want to move it they will. How new is your laser? Where are you located? Wicked Lasers recently switched their green lasers to direct diode, so if you live in a non-blacklisted country and...

    It from bit...

While certainly interesting, the video you linked makes the fatal assumption that the "observer" must be conscious to influence the outcome of the double slit experiment. This is simply not the case, though it does seem to be an increasingly common mistake, likely due to the intrinsic...

Video of 40 Watt 532nm YAG driven LaserScope

Kind of a necropost But they're not really all that dangerous, at least not for the experienced hobbyist. Would I want someone who has no experience with lasers or is just getting into lasers even going near one? Definitely not. But it doesn't take a degree in photonics to understand laser...

    Returning Banned Members

What about implementing a janitor or "sub-moderator" type of system where trusted members (i.e. vets, users that have been active for a certain period of time, users that have a reputation above a certain level, etc.) are granted special privileges? This has less to do with RBMs than it does...

583.8nm and 589nm, the golden brothers

Ultimatekaiser has a great teardown of a 589nm CNI PGL module from a few years ago here: Disassembly of a 589nm laser PGL-III-A (PIC HEAVY) IIRC, the spartan uses modules from CNI, so it should be very similar or possibly even identical.

That's adorable. And very interesting. +REP

583.8nm and 589nm, the golden brothers

Nd:YAG actually has way more transition lines than most people think. 1055nm, 1061.5nm, 1064.1nm, 1068.2nm, and 1073.8nm just to name a few centered around the dominant 1064(.1)nm line. Most are too weak to be very useful, but as UK already suggested, temperature fluctuations and mirror...

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please That was more for RedCowboy that it was for you lol. I was just pointing it out because, as you said, emitter count shouldn't matter too much in a fiber-coupled system.

PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please sub

Re: PERMANENT THREAD: Ebay& other internet FINDS of interest- read all the OP please But it's also fiber coupled, so the beam quality will be drastically improved.

Nice pics. How did you determine that it's 583.8nm? Did you spectro it yourself?

[Help] Building a green DPSS laser

Much easier but also much less flexible. Monolithic DPSS crystals are the absolute best way to build your first DPSS, but if you want to do anything with the output they're not really viable. (Much better configurations come pre-assembled and for less money) Depending on what erickes is trying...

    10 ML101U29-25 for $25!

Well obviously the graph itself can't be pulsed. :o I meant the power output data from the graph. I didn't include the image in the quote because it would take up unnecessary space. The spec sheet for the ML101U29 says 400mw pulsed, so I assumed that ~350mW from a diode that is nearly identical...

The Chinese love to troll the stupid.

Yeah, I guess "Commercially available" isn't really what I was trying to say. JL, Sanwu, and Laserglow/CNI all offer handhelds >2000mW. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of "The highest power you can find on eBay."

The Chinese love to troll the stupid.

Better a necro containing pertinent information than a new thread. :o Murdarr - There are no commercially available handheld 10W 532nm lasers. They just don't exist. The highest power handheld laser of any color you can find without having it custom built will be ~2W. The lasers you have...
