    Really, Really big Dye Laser

Just watched your video planters, really interesting stuff! Sometimes I forget that modern optics are so heavily intertwined with electronics. And that's some octocopter!

Man points laser at police cruiser.

Kids do stupid things, it's in their nature. I'm sure we've all made some dumb choices when we were kids, though for some people it doesn't seem to stop after childhood. The reason we see this kind of thing happen so often is probably because people are simply unaware that what...

    Ears OR Eggs?

Both for me please. I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend than smashing 400 eggs over my head and having my ears yanked on.

    Really, Really big Dye Laser

Thanks for all the info, I'm pumped (hehe) for more videos. I can't wait to see what you're going to do with this thing. I'll hold back all my other questions for now. :o

    Really, Really big Dye Laser

Really cool! Dye lasers are my absolute favorite. :yh: I have a few questions though: 1) What's the pulse length? If you mentioned it in the video I didn't catch it. 2) I've heard that some of the triplet quenchers smell awful and that it's nearly impossible to get the smell out of a room...

The Minamoto Kobayashi Sugar Rockets Project!

Well I didn't say that the perchlorates weren't toxic. If you handle them safely (as with almost any chemical) it shouldn't be a problem, even for the amateur.

The Minamoto Kobayashi Sugar Rockets Project!

I'm aware that they're used in solid rocket fuels, hence why I asked. ;) IIRC, when burned APCP produces mostly inert compounds such as H2O and CO2 (I think), plus metal oxides obviously, so contamination shouldn't be a problem unless you have a half-ton rocket explode before burning all of its...

The Minamoto Kobayashi Sugar Rockets Project!

I buy all my KNO3 from DudaDiesel. It's not industry rates, but they have pretty good prices and reasonable shipping fees. For pyrotechnics I just use it as is, but for HNO3 synthesis and other various reactions I recrystallize it just to be safe. Minamoto Kobayashi, have you ever tried APCP...

    Atlas Shrugged fans

Agreed. Wikipedia can not be a trusted for anything with any sort of political affiliation tied to it. However, the IPCC is not Wikipedia. If you want to get a real grasp on the issue, I suggest at least skimming the IPCC AR5. There's still probably some political bias there because that's a...

    Atlas Shrugged fans

dden4012, to embed videos, you only need to include the last bit of the url, in this case "VQlbiQj_49o". If you add the entire link between the tags it won't work for some of us.

    Atlas Shrugged fans

Allow me to butt in here- I've never read Atlas Shrugged in its entirety, but I have read/heard large portions of the book, to the point where I think I understand the main storyline and the concepts portrayed. Libertarianism is not a left/right issue as has already been pointed out. I've been...

    Community Goal?

I believe they are an ISP. Would explain why they're responsible for such a large portion of the traffic. They help pay for the forum IIRC.

    Community Goal?

I'm not saying there's a trend, or that the whole forum is on board. I'm saying that 12 members would be enough for a start. It doesn't matter though, because we don't even have 12 members. And I never claimed I was smarter than anyone else. I said that "some members here do display an...

    Community Goal?

12 is ~14% of 86, which is nothing to scoff at. I'm already part of multiple chemistry forums, I was just giving chemistry as an example of a hobby that faces similar problems. There's no need to bring that here, I agree. As for Drones/UAVs/RC/Motorcycles, why? It's not like discussion of those...

    Community Goal?

I guess I really should have emphasized this. I want you guys to suggest stuff that you want or need. Hell, you don't even need to suggest a solution, just a problem that you need solved. If I set the goal, people will just think that I'm looking for other people to do my work for free...

    Community Goal?

The graph was meant to showcase forum interest, not the general public's interest in lasers. :p It seems like this thread really (d)evolved into a discussion on a lot of topics that I never even intended to bring up, and that's partially my fault for not steering the discussion in the right...

New to lasers and need some safety advice

First, off, welcome to the forum! Second, +REP for asking about safety first. :) As for your questions: 1. Only DPSS lasers emit IR radiation. For diode lasers, which are most blue and red lasers, this shouldn't be a problem. There are green diode lasers, but the much more common green 532nm...

    Community Goal?

Yeah, things blew way off topic really fast, so thanks or that. Making LPF a better place is the end goal of this project though. I figured that the best way to do it would be to improve community cohesion and cooperation first. I came to the conclusion that establishing a common technological...
