GB: 473nm diode information / giveaway

Re: GB: 473nm diode information / raffle I'm still rooting for a 1W+ version IDK about guys. Maybe I set my hopes too high though :D

    A little lesson on heatsinks

You know what, I did swap that. For some reason I didn't catch it... derp. I was getting so technical in my head that I farxed a basic calculation HAHAHA.

    A little lesson on heatsinks

You seem to be missing that the "heatsink" doesn't do any dissipation. Its only a storage and movement conduit for the heat. All dissipation is done by the host. We use the term heatsink but in standard terms they don't actually do any by definition heatsinking. They should be called heat...

    A little lesson on heatsinks

Heat loss is not something you can calculate without extensive knowledge of the exact host used and the exact design of the heatsink for the host. The dissipation limits would be because of how efficient the heatsink transfers heat into the host as well as how efficiently the host dissipates the...

    A little lesson on heatsinks

@EpicHam Aluminum doesn't corrode as fast as copper. I have many aluminum heatsink lasers and all the heatsinks are just as shiny as day one while the copper ones are all heavily tarnished and corroded. Also. I have full unanodized aluminum hosts that are not tarnishing or corroding at all...

GB: 473nm diode information / giveaway

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund I agree on numbering based on order of donation like ben suggested. That would massively simplify it. Also, in case people alter their donated amounts the final numbers shouldn't be given until after all payments are received. That just seems like the easiest and...

GB: 473nm diode information / giveaway

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund I fully agree with Lazeerer about not killing it if its unnecessary. No need if we don't really gain any knowledge. Once you see the efficiency curve you can know that there isn't any real gain after a certain point and then just stop there and preserve the...

    A little lesson on heatsinks

I think that last post of mine summarizes the whole debate pretty well in fairly few words :D Granted I did simplify things a lot in that but its still technical enough to prove the point don't you think?

    A little lesson on heatsinks

Copper transfer's heat faster which inherently means is moves heat faster as well as cools off faster. Look up the term "Thermal Conductivity". Some people don't realize is that for ex copper at 50C and Aluminum at 50C are two drastically different amounts of stored energy. Copper would store...

GB: 473nm diode information / giveaway

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund I would be more interested in a 488nm diode if we could get our hands on one instead of the 473nm?

    A little lesson on heatsinks

I wish designing hosts could revolve around optimal specs for heatsinking but unfortunately there are issues with durability and also just looking good. Optimally the fins would have to be too thin, too deep, and too numerous, to be sturdy or practical.

    A little lesson on heatsinks

I have seen some pretty sweet finned designs. I actually plan to make my own hosts some day and I am going to attempt to make fins flow with the design.

Laser Warning Label Generator - It's back!

Not everyone gets it and that's fine with me either way. I think we should let Trevor have his thread back and not be a MLP debate LOL.

    A little lesson on heatsinks

Actually copper is superior for small heatsinks as well as enclosed systems. Its also superior for large heatsinks equally as much. Think about it. It takes longer to heat up and cools faster while pulling heat away from the diode faster as well. In a nutshell, its thermally superior in every...

Laser Warning Label Generator - It's back!

23 in 5 days BOIIII Besides... ANYWAY, thanks again Trevor. I have already used the tool several times since it was put back up. Same goes for a couple of the other tools on the site.

Re: GB: 473nm diode murder fund A unicorn is just about the most accurate description for these diodes. The PL520s used to be unicorns until they found out that the horns were just glued on.... except the glued on horn was solid gold making them still pretty damn expensive XD

Which is where this part of that post comes in: "The only reasons I use aluminum sometimes is because it is corrosion resistant, easier to work with, cheaper, lighter, and can be anodized to look cool."
