if they're expected at 5000 hours lifetime upto 600mW, you could probably just increase the current a bit to make up for it without too much problem, and keep the corrective features.

you just need to see the tip of the diode? it does seem to stick out a little best i can get with this camera: bear in mind the 1mm beam diameter red is bad for pointing, big divergence. you probably know, but you mentioned about the violet not being great for pointing.
