Is that 1k resistor right after the diode important or does it just represent the load? I only added in the resistor in parallel with the gate. My mosfet did not even allow any current to pass in the above configuration, but when I flipped the battery it always allowed current to pass regardless...

I tested out a few circuits including the one you suggested but sadly found that the only one that preserves that "indirect switching" attribute is this one: I don't think you can pull it (lossless reverse polarity protection+indirect switch) off with one mosfet I will invest in some circuit...

No diode runs at 12V, but my thinking was stringing several in series. But yeah I see what you mean, best bet is to stick with DIY inefficient IC-based regulators with massive heatsinks or to buy a proper expensive/efficient driver

You do not need university-level knowledge to assemble a laser. As others mentioned just buy the driver pre-made, buy a host pre-made, buy batteries pre-made, etc. (check old posts for more specifics). You most likely do not have the tooling needed to considerably cut costs of making your laser...

Yes that's what I initially meant by excess energy. Since the battery's current fully unleashed onto the LD it would fry it, the inductor stores the energy from the battery and releases it in controlled bursts which are smoothed out by a capacitor

The only 100% guaranteed safe laser goggles that block all wavelengths but allow u to still see are VR goggles (what I used to use). Just make sure the camera is hot-swappable in case it gets blinded!
