just losing the power to the drive did not hurt anything. if wires attached to the battery touched something then it certainly could have caused damage. also if you connected the batteries in reverse polarity then you could have damaged some components and / or the diode. a pic would really help.

maybe a macro pic of just the PCB would greatly help. u could id the ic chip and look at the datasheet for a good start... oh yeah what is this out of, a printer?
