Haha, oops! Yeah, I meant 2.5kV. Hey, it was only off by 3 orders of magnitude! Suppose I buy the one daguin posted, what would the effect of too much voltage? Unless I am mistaken and the power supply will provide up to a certain voltage and not a fixed output voltage.

If it lases while trying to start, then the pressure can't be too far out of operating range. Try just letting it try to start for a while. I bet it will come on shortly.

Yep. Chances are whatever HV source he is using, it's not putting out enough current. Not enough atoms being excited, gain never exceeds loss, no lasing but lots of glowing.
