Some of our forum members also make high-quality DIY lasers. I'm not sure if the "big players" are still selling 405 nm lasers as they seem to have moved on to 445 nm ones, but I'd check the Laser Pro Shop and the B/S/T boards.
As there seems to be hundreds of laser companies nowadays, it can be hard to determine which are reputable. While there is a forum for discussing such companies, a potential buyer might have to sift through multiple reviews to get a good idea of a company's reputation.

I may be wrong, but I have reasons to believe that "Stephanie" from the Wicked Lasers forum was the first person to make a DIY laser from a DVD burner.
What was done in the show sounds like a really bad idea. It could have resulted in tragic consequences if someone was armed and mistook the prank for a real robbery.

You could also try to get a job at one of the more reputable laser companies. There is a forum member (Event_Horizon) who joined the Laserglow team due to his interest in lasers.
I think we can all agree that police have difficult jobs. However, that does not mean they can shoot whatever they want, and they need to be held accountable for their actions just like everyone else.
