Three AAA batteries will not power the LM317 IT needs 5 volts alone to run so you would need at least 4 aaa batteries BUT 6 Is better. To power reds you really need ~7.2-7.4 volts, blue needs 9 volts.

If service mode is there It can be (and most likely is) coded in (hence the pandora battery) you just have to find the code that does it. To see if that IR diode and your driver are working use a camera phones camera, DON'T LOOK DIRECTLY AT IT PLEASE! Point the diode at a surface (use a dim lit area)  and look with the camera, it should illuminate the object. I use black construction paper and the IR shows up like shining a...

Cold heat soldering?  Do you mean one of those battery powered  (this http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062746 )soldering irons that don't get hot untill you touch metal. They get hot. I tried to solder LEDs with this and it melted the LED and not the solder, they don't work...

Re: Finally done it (I killed it by sneezing) Thats OK, well with 2 10 ohms you have 5 ohms so thats 1.25/5=250 so with the pot in play 230mA is near right, so to get higher mA you need to get lower resistors. With a 20x diode you should be able to get near 420mA safely so go to 3x 1 ohm...

Re: Finally done it (I killed it by sneezing) Well I was soldering my diode to the microdrive and sneezed and ripped the pin out of the diode. Ordered 2 more drives so be back in buisness in a few days.
