    New Blue Diodes - NUBM4F

Thanks, that makes sense. I can't wait to see how these diodes perform!

    New Blue Diodes - NUBM4F

Nice! Hopefully these have some improvements in regards to divergence. So, I'm assuming those two unpopulated diode "cells" came that way since you said you haven't extracted any yet. Interesting, I wonder why that would be?

The first days of LPF. the laser forum that was 'almost' never created

Great thread hak! I haven't always been very active here, but this was the first forum I ever became a member of. I can't believe it's been 12 yrs already, looks like hak's got me beat by a month...LOL! Seriously though, LPF is the best forum I've had the pleasure of being part of. Thanks Avery...

    How Important Is Soft Start?

Soft start is primarily used to prevent inrush current. The inrush current ( or instant spike @ startup) can effect the inductor on some dc to dc regulators(or "drivers" in the case of laser diodes) causing a momentary output that's outside the specified range of the regulator. Even regulators...

    100W laser pointer-

Wow what a monster, excellent work! What battery are you using? Nice job stuffing all that in there.

    Oiling Threads

Let's not forget about Teflon tape as an option as well. If you don't like Teflon tape a small dab of molybdenum would do the trick. I'd personally avoid using oils since they tend to migrate significantly over time, even Vaseline tends to migrate somewhat when heated.

Strange behavior of the red laser

It can happen when a laser diode is overdriven or back reflected causing a point of failure where it will no longer emit light at its previous potential output. It will only glow faintly, indicating that it had suffered from overheating of the semiconductor resulting in melting and...

Strange behavior of the red laser

Thanks for your honesty. No hard feelings... I don't know if that particular diode with the burnt spot was from back reflection but i strongly suspect it was. I do specifically remember decanning a 9mm 660nm that had back reflection cod and seeing the same type of damage/burn though. In my...

Strange behavior of the red laser

Oh man i feel bad for you....honestly. You think this forum is just a place for pissing matches, that's really sad 😢. You all but called me a liar over something you obviously haven't tried and had no justification for your comments. The point is that yes you can see damage to an LD facet with...

Cyparagon....where did you go? So quick to doubt and post a rude comment & gif....anything else to say now?

    Multiple beams

That's a great idea, thank you for sharing that! Unfortunately, for that pistol build I'm using a 20mm module without any additional heatsink, so that wouldn't work. But, for future builds using a 12mm module I'll have to remember that. Thanks again!

Strange behavior of the red laser

An electron microscope is not necessary...unless you have boomer vision or something... Yeah I'm calling bs... This morning i was able to replicate exactly what i was talking about using a magnifying glass and a collimating lens. No editing or cropping on the photos....My phone camera makes it...

Strange behavior of the red laser

Yes it's very small, you'll need to use an eye loop or microscope to see it well but it's bet it's there. I've seen it before....i learned about back reflections the hard way about 12yrs ago. My very first diode build actually. I picked up several 9mm 660nm ~100mw diodes from a NASA contractor...

    Multiple beams

The sloppy threads of the M9x0.5 barrels have frustrated me for years! I usually wrap 2-3 layers of Teflon tape around them (not ideal but it helps). On my latest build i decided to drill out the thumb adjuster nut that's usually on the tip of the lens barrel. There's only a few threads in one...

Strange behavior of the red laser

Yep, sounds like COD (catastrophic optical damage). I bet if you look at the tiny facet on the front of the semiconductor you'll see that it's burnt. Of course disconnect the power/batteries before you look at it just to be safe.
