    27000 Hours

That's impressive, though not surprising. Seems to be a correlation between power and lifespan. That sort of diode was likely designed to be used in barcode scanners and other devices were a long lived laser light bulb is required.

What is the wavelength of pure orange?

610nm. It's unfortunate the recipe used to make red laser diodes cannot be tweaked to freqs higher than ~635nm. No orange LDs :( DPSS will get one amber.. however expensive, fragile and inefficient.

    Hologram videos

Created more transmission holograms last night. These are trivial to make, though the film expensive and the development process tedious. No lens apparatus required - any lens-less DVD diode will do. I wonder if this stuff is censored, as these holograms so lovely and easy to create -- despite...

    CNI no longer exporting >5mW?

Not surprising, seems to be the direction the laser stuff has been going. After all, for close to 10 years now, very powerful lasers were available while the authority looked the other way, despite the law which wasn't often enforced. I swear some laser dealers, wicked included, are trying to...

    My DIY LG Red

Two laser bricks from my LG drive now. in addition to violet, red - Build details: http://laserpointerforums.com/f50/lg-be12-red-diode-laser-build-88149.html I'm guessing it's around 70-80mW. No LPM. In the 100mW ballpark. It's a so-so burner as I could not get the diode centered...

LG BE12 - red diode laser build

Success! Two working laser bricks from the LG drive - I had to sand down the flange on the Meredith housing, and glue the optical assembly together. Instead of using the spring. There was not enough space between the optics and the diode for the spring to fit. Unfortunately I could not get...

    Engaging Radiometer in the dark

NajzK6qQ7SY lnsJ8Tdps84 Laser is ~100mW. Don't use it often. Want it to live as long as possible - I've got only one 815 diode remaining. :(

    Red Build Attempt #2

Very bad luck. Only the IR side of this diode fired. So three wrecked diodes in a row, the worse luck I've ever had. The HP sealed diode was a victim of the 'DDL' circuit. One of the gator clips attached to the diode, while I was metering it, moved.. the capacitor then killed it. :( A known...

    Red Build Attempt #2

Oh no. Here's a picture of the diode. Another flatpack. And, judging from the reflection off the diode window, another holographic lens designed to be near sighted. Sigh. I HATED f*cking up and killing that last diode. I don't have any more old drives.

    Red Build Attempt #2

F*CK!!! Blew the diode. Lased brilliantly at 50mA for a moment or two before the gater clip slipped and the cap popped it. These closed can diodes, which are good for pointers, appear to be becoming scarce. HP drive was 10 years old. Sigh.

    Red Build Attempt #2

I believe the outermost diode on the sled's the red one. At least the lens coatings for it are blue. It's got a 'L8Y424L' on the side of the can. Nice sealed diode. Anyone know the pinout??

    Red Build Attempt #2

Here are some images from the Compaq's internal drive - an HP DVD Writer DVD 400i Here's the sled. Anyone know these diodes? Extraction will not be easy :(

    Red Build Attempt #2

Failure. Unable to unsolder circuit board, rear of diode. Legs ripped out. :( In picture I'd scoured down back of diode, however could not get enough purchase to reattach legs. I'm now moving on to the internal drive in my 2005 Compaq. Very exciting, I know.
