Bought a few of these drives today, but bummer!! There's no such thing as a 5,6 mm diode inside.
It's a small one, which is mounted in a square piece of cast aluminium.
I had a laser diode mount, which I ripped out of a prehistoric HP laserprinter, and it gives a nice sharp beam, @ 220 mA...
Just as it says on the tin, since I value my eye sight too much, I have no desire to fry my retina(s), so I was thinking whether for DVD-red lasers glasses like used in goggles for autogenic welding are safe enough?
Alternatively I also have glasses used for arc welding, but with those...
I just saw that this drive is still available, but only the SATA version.

It's not easy to make a good DIY laser, especially because the required hardware is not easily available over here. And I've also seen that certain suppliers in the US do not export stuff due to BLABLA export...
