But,

You don't a pretty powerful mid or far IR laser to do retinal damage. I have retinal burns from a CNI wickedlaser at less than 100mW.
You specified "mid/far IR" , "retinal damage" and "100mW" so I assumed you meant mid/far IR 100mW lasers made by CNI :-/
Anyway I wasn't talking about retinal damage , I said
But you need a pretty powerfull mid/far IR laser to do cornea damage
...cornea damage....

But I see where the confusion was made :p

I specified it in the first sentence, ended it with a comma, and began a new one, denoting a new idea. I can see where the failed high school english was made.

i know guns and lasers aren't thesame...but the situation is virtualy the same. all i meant was that both have potential for harm-most all people are aware of that potential and still some people shoot themselvs in the foot...i know, i know-feet ain't eyes.

The situations have their differences also ::)
But anyway, we have:
Lots of gun injuries and lots of people with impaired vision, spot blindness, lots of idios pointing lasers at planes. We have accidents , and we have bad thing done on purpose with both of those. The reason no one ever got completely blind is because how hard it really is, especially from an accident(no one is really gonna try on purpose, lol!).
It's harder to get blinded by a laser than killed by a gun.As we discussed before, the lasers that can completely blind you are very powerful and probably very rare, maybe even 1 laser to 10.000 guns(just off the top of my head), and that one laser is handled with caution by a trained and responsible staff nowhere near the public.

Sure there's the ocasional retard that shoots a brick wall when drunk and gets hit by a ricochet, or the bigger retard that shoots himself in the foot on purpose. But usually , a person points and shoots a gun at another person because he wants him dead, disabled or injured.

Basically,

Most vision impairments due to superbright light is of the sorts of an effect of seeing a fog or smear in vision later when in a dim lit room and viewing a tv or pc or other bright light. Generally in daylight and outdoor or good indoor lighting, the vision and focus ability is ok as the better eye does most of the work.

Most laser affected eyesight tends to be indicated by watching tv or a pc in a dim lit room. The experience is usually a feeling of a smudge or fog in a central area when focusing. This makes one want to blink alot to try to gain a better focus.

Though it may be very annoying in a dim lit room, once the room is better lit, the eyes seem to see better and respond faster with less blur when watching monitors.

Lasers are not the only bright light out there, welding processes can cause the same effects.

SN

EDIT: I do not condone this as a replacement for glasses or even better using a digi cam to view powerful lasers, atleast close one eye if your gonna stare at any dot through cheap eyewear or (never do this) no eyewear. For my eyes, use a digi cam, pretty hard to do anything but burn out a ccd sensor this way.

Tell George Lucas that lasers and guns can't be compared! ;D Maybe one day, they will be one and the same! Technology is not too far behind. Just wear white, and you got yourself "bullet proof".

Well if somebody wanted to do damage to someone else, they probably would want to spend money on a weapon like a gun or crossbow or something in lieu of a high powered laser. But once light sabers are invented, I'm getting a blue or green one! :D

I heard of a guy who lost one of his eyes (not just his sight, the eye itself). The beam burnt a portion of his retina and it got infected. The doctors had to remove it, we now call him Pirate Pete.

If I had one of my eyes removed I would mount a highpowerd laser module in my empty eye socket :p That would be frickin sweet, it would make you like a cyborg :D Plus, if someone attacks you on the street, all you have to do is look him in the eye :D

That's awesome! I would use a high powered IR module! :p

Yea, or you could strap that thing around your head and keep both your eyes...hmm....I think I'm gonna make mod some sunglasses with a tiny highpowered module completely covering your left eye and a protective lens on the right eye :p Or maybe protective lenses on both eyes and module on a side? :p Just have to figure out how to operate it hands-free :-/

Sunglasses? Lasers on your eyes? and people tell me I am dangerous!!!!

I suppose you could use laser as a form of heads up display for heat and or sonic telemetry. Could be used to track small bugs/rodents or what not. But I don’t know if its a good idea. I mean if you see some hot chick and you want to make that...... oh so important eye contact..... and you forget your wearing them(as I always tend to do)……….................... Could be worse then calling her by the wrong name…..trust me……. that’s not a very fun evening.........
