Default Jayrob 2D Maglite 445nm first impressions

Hi Guys,

So I recently connected with Jayrob and decided to go for one of his maglite kits, specifically his 2D maglite build with all the bells and whistles. I wanted this build to be very powerful and have an extended duty cycle so I felt the 2Dmaglite kit fit the bill. Because I have been on this forum way too much I have gotten knee deep into copper heatsinks so I had Jay make me a custom copper heat sink to support longer and more stable duty cycles. This particular build came outfitted with a custom 2.5A X-drive driver as I wanted to push the limits of the 9mm diode and make use of the two 6000mah 32600 batteries the maglite is made for. I also opted for Jay's voltage monitor and keyswitch upgrade just for kicks and to have one in my collection. I have to say, this is likely my most powerful laser and on top of that it is built like a tank so it can certainly take the heat and torturous runtimes I will be putting it through. I have not LPM'd the torch yet as my Laserbee is in the shop so I will edit this when it does come back and I can do some power testing. With reference to the build quality, Jay is simply a master when it comes to the precision with which everything that was installed. I inspected the torch very thoroughly and the laser looked absolutely of factory quality. Here are some pics of the build... After a week or so I'll do a full review since I want to get some more Lase time with this blue behemoth before I give more detailed insights on the build and its performance. BTW, all the pictures are of the stock configuration.v The last pic I attached was how I ended up keeping it. And if you're wondering, the h-sink for that is a MrCrouse original design aluminum sink. This thing is a beautiful piece that I simply love so I decide to swap out the copper sink for this one. I ended up using the copper sonk in a different maglite build I had and have no regrets as the 2-tone look is very pleasing to me. or those of you that have not purchase a jay rob kit, CHECK HIM OUT. He can fabricate and mod anything laser or flashlight to meet your custom needs. Jay was very solid to do business with and was very upfront with all the build specifics anf most importantly the cost. He makes all his own heatsinks and does a mighty fine job. The tolerances for the copper sink he custom made for me were awesome, no wiggle room at all. From Tail cap to business end, this thing screams quality. Enjoy!

Here's a link to his page in case you wanted to browse his kit offerings:

Here is the final configuration I went with:

You're welcome... I really like the laser, even though I would have liked it best if it was a single color with the massive heatsink. Can't wait to see the LPM results. I have to guess that the laser never heats up to the touch with such a monster HS.

Can't wait to see what your 9mm diode meters at with 2.5 Amps to it.

Bet that thing is over 3 Watts. Hope the diode lasts at that current...

How do you like the way it is wired so that the tail switch turns on the voltage monitor, and doubles as an 'armed' indicator?

Thanks for the review thread! +rep

By the way...

Battery voltage monitor color code:

Bright blue - Full charge
Cyan - Very good
Green - Good
Yellow/Amber - Low warning
Red - Batteries low

I like the voltage monitor. I didn't realize it tells you the voltage only when the laser is on and not when it is "armed" and in stand-by. I was thinking, man these are the best batteries ever. I still have full power after an hour of use. Didn't look at the voltage light when the laser was on...doh! I love the build though. Solid as a tank and you were right, you would have to seriously misuse this thing to actually render the laser irreparable. Can't wait for our new build. Its gonna be EPIC!

Another flawless Jayrob build. There's something compelling about the Maglites. The heft feels great and the voltage meter on that beast is a nice sweetener.

That's a really nice laser build you have there.

Actually it does show battery voltage at all times when it's on...

But when you click that side button to fire the laser (especially at that power), the load sags your supply voltage, and it will show in the voltage monitor read out. (but with those cells, it will still be blue 'full charge' for some time even under load)

But after an hour run time, even if your still showing 'green' under load (guessing that is what you probably see after an hour of run time), it will most likely still show blue when the key switch is on without the load of the LD...

Make sense?

So for instance if with my XML flashlight mod that has 3 modes, after an hour in high mode, it may be showing green, but you can switch to medium mode and it will be blue. (less load/voltage sag)

it was a bit more obviously due to the material and the sheer weight of the sink (276g!). plus machining copper that thick. I figure if you're going to spend your hard earned money on a quality laser, make sure it's done right, make sure it's done by the best. Buy once, cry onceTo answer your question about the h-sink price difference, the aluminum sink was $38 vs copper $80.
