Has the flat laser diode that is completely unusable in laser pointers.

How do these compare to, say a long open can? It would be nice if they kicked out some more power for the trouble. I tested the IR that comes in the LG 22x as it is the same config. It died at close to 350mW in the original heatsink, where as the 5.6mm 780nm from say a pioneer will give up at aroun 2-250mw mounted in an axiz. You going to test it?

While that was a fascinating answer, I will most certainly be picking one of these up to play with ;)

Hey Kenom,
I found that 8 x 8 TEC we talked about..
PM me your address and I'll get it to you in lieu of that original LPM fiasco. ;)
If that's OK with you... :)

You can really get 250mW out of a CD burner diode? :-? I always thought they were only good for <100mW.

I have 3 of these. These drives suck as dvd burners also! Not good for diodes, not good to burn discs, useless drives, they might as well be readers only. one out of 3 discs I make with any of these is a coaster. :(

I have one of these I believe.

Do you think it's worth removing it from the burner?

Here's the specs on it:
Code:
16x multiformat dual-layer DVD±RW
(Up to 8.5GB with dual-layer media)
Write max: 16x DVD±R, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+RW, 4x DVD+R DL, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW

How much output could I safely get out of that?
It's not IR is it? I'm not going to even bother if it is.

Please say its cause the abnormally powerful diode burns holes in the disc ::)

Re: Sony Optarc flop.  DON'T GET THIS.

I'm sure if you want to spend the time to try to build a custom module for it like I did for my to-3 diode, it will burn just fine, why when you can get a different diode for 20 bucks? I guess if you already have one of these drives it would be something to play with if you didn't want to just use it to read discs, and burn lots of coasters. :) one of the ones I have was given to me because the owner thought it was junk, the other 2 I bought because they had a silver front, and matched the case my machine is in.
