Default Why is the aperture opening so large on DX lasers?

I just noticed that the aperture opening was Large in the pics (DX pen lasers)...like they drilled it larger or something lol. The same model (one i have) has an opening that is noticeably smaller.

Why is this? Different manufacturers?, but why the same exact laser? *

Amazon - 5mW Newwish style 532nm - Momentary power increase to around 20mW for a couple seconds when cold. Power visibly drops back to a safe level. It's probably the first time I have seen an on spec 5mW green that immediately powers on at 5mW without a delay.

2 Cheapie Ebayser 5mW 650nm Pointers 2AAA - (~10mW)
Amazon - 5mW Newwish style 650nm - uh ... it's severely higher than 5mW - I would almost bet on 50mW because it looks as bright as the 5mW above after heating up.

Amazon - 5mW Newwish style 405nm pointer - as usual, significantly above 5mW spec. Beam is surprisingly visible in the dark alongside the green. Was able to burn plastic easily when focused.

Just got myself some sweet Sanyo Eneloop AAs and AAAs. - They work Great!

There are lots of laser "clones" on dealextreme. All of them have slight variations. That's why there's the True 5mW and the not true one, both are from different manufacturers.

It's probably because of their poor quality, with the beam coming out at an angle so often. So instead of fixing it so the beam comes out the middle and doesn't hit the cap, they just make the hole bigger. :

According to rumors smaller holes = real true laser bigger hole = fake true laser.

Mine was a smaller hole opened it up it was new-wish (true laser).

It's to let all the IR out so that the power meters show a higher reading.

I think we're coming to the conclusion that it's because DX is so cheap, and does everything that could possibly done to a laser beam wrong (except making it zig-zag). ;D

I purchased DX SKU 91 in September and it had an extremely large aperture. However, it also has a very good driver and reports anywhere from 50-80mW on my photoelectric meter. Yes, it's ridiculously overpowered and was a total fluke. However, it runs on Ni-MH rechargeables without a problem, even though the combined voltage is typically around 2.4-2.6V.

I then purchased a few more as Christmas gifts for my family a few months later. Their aperture was much smaller, they put out far less power, and they would not run well on rechargeable batteries (i.e. the driver was definitely different).
