Didn't want to add more images to not make this thread huge xD. I filmed a video of this laser being pointed in the sky at night but the video is too heavy, I might upload it later.. ;)

How do you know its truely 5 mW? Most of the ebay pens are over spec and usually in the range from 15 - 60 mW. They are also not IR filtered...take care:beer:

Well I can't confirm if it's actually overspec since I do not own any LPM's but the laser itself is very bright and the beam can easily be seen in a well lit room :)apparently it's overspec but I'm not really sure.

I can see your not wearing safety glasses so say good bye to your good eye vision.......buy some proper safety glasses and do your eyes a favor. IR in case you don't know will make you go blind and the best part about IR is.......wait for it........its invisible!!!! Most of those cheap pens are around 15-45mW green and 10-15mW IR

That's not 5mW for sure. I have a 5mW pulsed sight, and the beam is barely visible at night unless you are in complete darkness, or you are viewing it at a close angle to its axis

I would say it looks like the 50mW I have.

I don't really see what's all the extra caution behind the IR thing... It follows the green beam, so unless you get hit by the green beam (or a very near miss like eyelid or bridge of nose), you won't get hit by the IR.

Looking at the dot close up (indoors) is like looking directly at the sun.. it's not good for your eyes. Most of us have lost respect for lasers over 5mW (even me) and we treat 50mW like its just a toy.. let me tell you, its not. 50mW will easily damage your eyes if you get a direct hit, you might have permanent black spots. Just looking at the dot close up is permanently damaging your eyes. ALWAYS WEAR GLASSES! Just look at this GIF and swap out the yellow digger with your eyes :lasergun:

yeah if you are outdoors then no need to wear glasses but just like every other color, these things reflect off surfaces. even if it is a matte wall, both green and IR will reflect back at your eyes, hence why we always say wear safety glasses. outside pointing in the sky you are fine without glasses but other than that i ALWAYS wear mine

I'll get some safety glasses ASAP, thanks for suggesting me.
Which glasses do you recommend me?

EDIT: The images above had been taken to show some beamshots of this green laser pointer indoors, Most of the time I use this laser pointer for pointing outdoors at night (For pointing at further buildings, long distances or pointing at stars).

I haven't shined this laser on my eye, and will never do that, I do not have any minimal eye damage signs since my vision is actually the same as ever. Sometimes when I shine the laser on a surface and look the beam closely for a period of time I can still see a green blur when I STOP staring at the laser beam.. but it's temporary. That green blur dissapears in about a minute, but I know I should not look at the dot since it may damage my eyes too, as Laik stated.

Oh, My mom is odontologist and she uses some sort of ''safety glasses'' for dental purposes, those glasses protect her from damaging her eyes from UltraViolet radiation. ''UV protective eyewear''

Her safety glasses look like this:

My mom owns 3 safety glasses like this.. Can I use this kind of glasses to protect my eyes from laser radiation?

do a quick search above, of safety glasses and you will find roughly 9,999,999,999,999 topic on this forum. most common are eagle pair (very nice, i own some), uvex (cheaper but still good, own 2 as spares for friends) and then you get into the high end stuff. uvex will run you ~$10, eagle pair will run you ~$45 iirc

Looking at the beam is fine and with the sorts of power your laser is probably outputting it would not be advisable to look at the dot close up. Generally off a mat and or very dark surface (provided its not reflective) the risk is low. Just be aware of your surroundings and where you're pointing the laser. Don't forget too, the laser may not be a danger for you, but could be for someone else, were they to walk in/by. By this I mean think a head and don't let the beam terminate at a door or near a window...

Have a look in my sig for details of what goggles are available and where to buy them.

Thanks for the info. I'll order these ones tomorrow.
Uvex S1933X Skyper Safety Eyewear, Black Frame, SCT-Orange UV Extreme Anti-Fog Lens - Amazon.com
Although I'll test my mom's glasses to see if her glasses stop laser radiation go through the lens.

You cant see the IR that is leaking and Im certain neither your mums, nor the ones you are ordering will fully protect you. Check with a video camera you'll be able to see if there is any IR. If there is and you want to be safer, you can buy a filters for a dollar or so on ebay...;)

Do you mean if I point the laser beam to a video camera I can see if there is any existing IR filter inside the laser?

No you will see if there is any IR coming out of the laser. There should be as these lasers dont have IR filters...
