Default using a laser in a riot

it came to my attention that riot police are protected from everything except for light. with riots going on in many countries right now in the middle east i thought it wouldnt be a half bad idea to use a laser with a spread beam in a straight line is a very good offence against clusters of riot police as it can be used to dazzle many many people in seconds causing them to retreat i did a google search on this and found this Cyber Riot: Greek Protesters Use Lasers to Dazzle Police, Then Attack Them With Catapults, Stones And Petrol Bombs im not a destructive person but it came to my attention that this would actually be a very effective long range defence thats is fairly safe so long as the beam is spread in a str8 line

i dont mean to be a trouble maker so tell me if im doing something wrong here

I always belive in having the right tool for the job.

Don't these guys own any guns? they are far more effective at getting the point across then rocks, molotovs and lasers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=ncdXfUAkMUI
Worked for those guys.

I think alot of people are going to say.

NO be carefull with lasers! They arent toys! You can get permanent damage!

But really in some situations if you could chose between shooting (killing) someone,
Or blinding him (dosnt even have to be permanently) then you know what to do....

If you cant see, Trust me you wont harm anyone.

Young, nervous, cop. Some yutz flashes him in the eyes with a laser. Cop reacts defensively (draws and fires at the laser offender).

"If you cant see, Trust me you wont harm anyone." ? I trust you to be stupid.

Default Re: using a laser in a riot

Works better in theory.

Unless you've got video gear to watch and steer an IR beam, the laser is going to be visible wavelengths, and it'll be pointing out the operator as well as it'll be illuminating the .gov "forces of jackbooted opression" etc.

Beam attenuation, the divergence etc. and a very erratic dwell time on the target's eyes due to moving riot cops, and a moving rioter firing the laser, possibly also being jostled by the crowd, if he does not have a fixed vantage point, mean actual blinding, temporary, or permanent if you don't give a rip, is going to be hard.

I know we talk all the time about how "it's faster than your blink reflex!" a 100th of a second will do permeanant damage! etc. etc. etc. Well that's perfectly TRUE, but it's for accidental exposure to specular reflective surfaces while messing about in your workshop or house, or showing the laser to friends in tight quarters.

At a distance of dozens, if not hundreds of meters in an urban riot situation, getting a decent blinding effect by anything you can hold in your hand is going to be a different story. Even if you have the raw Watts in your favor.

Something with an optical/video sighting system, servo controls etc. that's a different story. But you're also operating from a relatively fixed base which means you're easy to find and catch. You can't run with the crowd.

Although I suppose going back to the NIR option. you could rig something up and stick it high on a wall to look like a security camera. Then maybe control it via Bluetooth, or WiFi from a pad or smartphone and maybe you'd actually smoke a few eyeballs.

However, that's sounding an awful lot more like premeditated terrorism than it does reactive less-than-lethal self-defense should things get ugly, and the .gov forces not respect basic human rights etc.

This is probably not the best discussion ever, but if you are curious about this sort of thing then google dazzlers.

The military already uses them.
